In the vast desert area of New Mexico in the White Sands National Park area, blooming soap weed yuccas are a wonderful sight. The area is in the Tularosa basin area with San Andres Mountains to the West and Sacramento Mountains to the East. Drifts in the the dunes can be 10' to 60' high. The dunes are a magical and unusual place in the Southwest. The wind-created ripples create a stunning visual of shadows of light and dark. As day light shifts into evening there is a stillness and a pastel glow of light on the sand and yuccas.

This blooming yucca stands tall in the desert of New Mexico at White Sands National Park. The park is a field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. The San Andres mountains are to the West and the Sacramento Mountains to the East with the Tularosa basin in between. The yuccas bloom in spring. This stunning area is beautiful with the bright blue sky against the white sand. Plants play a critical role in the ecosystem as they provide food and shelter for wildlife.
