Fort Saint Anthony (Portuguese: Forte Santo António; Dutch: Fort Sint Anthony) was a fort built by the Portuguese in 1515 near the town of Axim, in what is now Ghana.

This “gate of no return” was the last stop before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. This picture shows the outside fortified walls of the castle, nowadays ornate by African art.
Ouidah / Whydah / Ajuda, Atlantique Department, Benin: the Portuguese Fort of Ouidah, also known as Fort São João Baptista de Ajudá, is a historical landmark that reflects the country's colonial past. Built in the 17th century, the fort served as a trading post and a military outpost for the Portuguese Empire. It played a significant role in the transatlantic slave trade, with thousands of enslaved Africans being sold there by local rulers. The Church of St. Francis of Assisi was built in 1661 by the Portuguese in the Portuguese Viceroyalty of India. The Church of St. Francis of Assisi, together with a convent, was established by eight Portuguese Franciscan friars who landed in Goa in 1517.
Island of Gorée, Dakar, Senegal: derelict building once home to the French governors, built in 1864  for the head of the naval division of the African coasts - also know as Roume Palace, after the last governor the live in it, Ernest Roume. Gorée Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its historical significance as a major center of the transatlantic slave trade. From the 15th to the 19th century, European colonial powers, including the Portuguese, Dutch, French, and British, used the island as a transit point for slaves bought from African rulers and sold to clients in the Americas. Today, Gorée Island is both a memorial and a cultural destination, attracting visitors who come to reflect on its past and explore its art and history.

Fort Amsterdam is a former slave fort in Abandze, Central region, Ghana. It was built by the English between 1638 and 1645
Namutoni Fort (Old Fortress of the German Schutztruppe) at Etosha National Park in Kunene Region, Namibia. It was built in 1896 as a German police post and used as a prison for English prisoners during World War I.  Destroyed in 1904 during the Battle of Namutoni, it was rebuilt a year later and declared a monument in 1947, and restored in 1957. Today it is a completely free to enter monument with no payment required and is located at Namutoni camp.

Luanda, Angola: Sao Miguel fortress, a historic military stronghold built by the Portuguese in 1576. Originally constructed to protect the city and its harbor from foreign invasions, the fortress became a key administrative center during the colonial period. Its strategic position on a hill overlooking Luanda Bay offered a commanding view and defense against potential threats. Over the centuries, São Miguel Fortress has witnessed significant historical events, including the transatlantic slave trade and the Angolan struggle for independence. Today, it stands as a well-preserved monument and houses the Museum of the Armed Forces, offering visitors insight into Angola's colonial and military history while providing panoramic views of Luanda.
