Underwater Red Scorpionfish fish deep in sea Sea life Mediterranean sea Scorpaena scrofa Scuba diver point of view
Close up of a Devil Scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis diabolus). Photographed in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia.
The Devil Scorpionfish (Scorpaenopsis diabolus) is a master of camouflage, blending perfectly into the rocky substrate of coral reefs. Its mottled brown and white coloration, paired with its spiny fins and venomous spines, make it a formidable predator. The image shows the Devil Scorpionfish lying in wait, its mouth slightly open, as it waits for unsuspecting prey to swim by.
The Tassled Scorpionfish Scorpaenopsis oxycephala is a master of camouflage in highly variable colour and so a successful ambush perdator. He has 12 dorsal spines. The first in front is much shorter, the last is hidden in the fat layer. The species occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from Red Sea to the Seychelles (Seychelles confirmed by own reseach) and to Taiwan and Guam in outer cleat-water reef slopes and channels in a depth range from shallow to 35m, max. length 36cm, common 30cm. \n\nTriton Bay, West Papua Province, Indonesia \n3°54'2.544 S 134°6'23.862 E at 9m depth

Weedy Scorpionfish Rhinopias frondosa can reach a maximum 23 cm length. The colour can range from yellow and lavender to dark red and purple. Like most Scorpaenidae, Weedy Scorpionfish are mostly nocturnal ambush hunters, using their camouflage to prey on unsuspecting fish and invertebrates. They rarely swim (thes do not have a swim bladder!), but rather move along the bottom propelling themselves with their fins. Alor Island, Indonesia, 8°15'50\
