Close-up of a giant Pacific octopus with its tentacles spread. This species is one of the two largest octopus species in the world.

The common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) is a cephalopod of Octopodidae family. Much in the shallows, no more than 200 meters. He prefers substrates rough, rocky, because they are rich of hiding places, cracks and small caves in which to hide. Present in all the seas and oceans, it is also widespread in the Mediterranean Sea.

$Veined Octopus or Coconut Octopus Amphioctopus marginatus (ex. Octopus marginatus) occurs in temperate and tropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific in a depth range from 0 to 190 m, max. length 30cm, mantle length 10cm, max. weigth 400g. \nThe Veined Octopus can bury itself in sand or mud. They also exhibit a curious behaviour adaption of using discarded clam shells and halves of coconut shells for protection. The octopus inhabits sandy and muddy habitats, that offer it little protection from passing predators. Discarded halves of coconut shells are common in waters near human settlements throughout Indonesia. When two halves fit together, the halves make a perfect refuge, difficult for predators to open. \nAmphioctopus marginatus lays up to 100 000 small eggs which hatch into tiny planktonic young. These are carried in ocean currents, accounting for its wide distribution. \nLembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°27'13.104 N 125°14'14.634 E at 13m depth$
