Giotto's magnificent frescoes on the side walls inside the Basilica Superiore di San Francesco (Upper Basilica of Saint Francis), in the heart of medieval Assisi, Umbria, central Italy. The famous painter Giotto painted this series of grandiose frescoes between 1292 and 1305, depicting the Stories of Saint Francis with the most significant episodes of the life of the Saint of the Poor from his vocation to his death. The image refers to the view of the nave towards the transept of the Basilica, with the high altar in the centre and the large stained glass windows of the apse in the background. Built in Italian Gothic style starting in 1228 and completed in 1253, the Basilica has housed the mortal remains of the Saint since 1230, preserved in a crypt. The church was designed by Maestro Jacopo Tedesco and is composed of the Basilica Inferiore (Lower Basilica) and the Basilica Superiore (Upper Basilica). Famous for being the birthplace of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, Assisi and the spirituality of its sacred places have become over the centuries a symbol of peace, a point of reference for tolerance and solidarity among peoples and among the world's different faiths. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Since 2000, the Basilica and the other Franciscan places in Assisi have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Image in high definition quality.

The sanctuary of Rivotorto stands in Rivotorto, at the foot of Mount Subasio, not far from Santa Maria degli Angeli. Inside the sanctuary what is called the Hovel was rebuilt, the place where Francis of Assisi and his first companions settled to pray, meditate, work at the dawn of the Franciscan Fraternity, and in fact this moment is remembered with an engraving in stone at the entrance, HIC PRIMORDIA FRATRUM MINORUM (here the beginnings of the minor friars). The sanctuary protects the restored remains of two small stone buildings, without any ornament, inside which according to tradition Francis and his companions took refuge. This place, around which there are roads and parking lots, was once surrounded by the countryside, a countryside much less disciplined and cultivated than the one that the Assisi countryside represents today.

A splendid light illuminates the harmonious façade and bell tower of the Chiesa Abbaziale di San Pietro (Abbey Church of St. Peter) in the medieval heart of Assisi in Umbria, central Italy. In the background stretches the fertile Umbrian plain, with cultivated fields and gentle hills. Built in Romanesque and Gothic style in the 10th century by the Benedictines on a site where a Roman necropolis once stood, the facade of San Pietro was made of red stone from the nearby Monte Subasio (Mount Subasio). The church has a rectangular plan with a façade composed of three doors and three rose windows, two smaller ones on the sides and a central one that surmounts the large entrance door. Famous for being the city of San Francesco and Santa Chiara (St Francis and St Clare), Assisi is recognized in the world as a place of spirituality and peace between all peoples and different confessions. The beautiful and austere Porziuncola (The Portiuncula) inside the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, in the medieval town of Assisi, in Umbria, central Italy. Built in 1569 in Baroque and Mannerist style, the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli (Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels) was created to protect the Franciscan site of the Porziuncola, a small abandoned church in gothic style that Saint Francis repaired in 1205 with the help of some poor and underprivileged people and where he discovered his vocation, beginning to welcome his first followers. After the death of the Saint of the Poor, the Porziuncola became one of the places most visited by pilgrims and a place of strong spirituality. On the façade of the Porziuncola, above the external entrance, there is a fresco by Johann Friedrich Overbeck from 1829, depicting Saint Francis receiving indulgence from Christ and the Virgin. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life.
