It is a herbaceous plant. There are underground rhizomes. Grows in small clumps. Single leaves arranged alternately Broken into clusters at the base of the stem. The leaf edges are smooth. The leaf stalks spread out into overlapping sheets. The flower clusters emerge from the leaf axils at the base of the stem. The calyx and petals are the same, white mixed with purple, and form a small tube. The tip is separated into 6 petals. The stamens are 6, yellow. The fresh fruit is round in shape. When ripe, it is bluish-purple. Commonly found in mixed evergreen forests and dry evergreen forests. Flowers around October to December.

Berries of the dewberry may contain psychotropic substances, the identity of which has not yet been determined. After consumption of fruits, symptoms of intoxication - such as intoxicating excitement, vomiting, pupil dilation and dizziness - have occasionally been observed. Intoxications are possible only after consumption of large quantities. The parasitic tubular fungus Monilinia megalospora (formerly also Sclerotina megalospora) is probably responsible for this.
