Bumpass Hell is a hydrothermal area in Lassen Volcanic National Park, located in Northern California.  Steam is released from the Lassen hydrothermal system, where the temperature of the steam gets as high as 322°F (161°C).  Bumpass Hell was named after Kendall Vanhook Bumpass, a settler who burned a leg after falling into a boiling pool.  His leg was eventually amputated.

Lassen Peak, also known as Mount Lassen, is the southernmost active volcano in the Cascade Range. Located in the Shasta Cascade region of Northern California, Lassen rises 2,000 ft above the surrounding terrain and has a volume of 0.5 cu mi, making it one of the largest lava domes on Earth.

California’s Lassen Peak, having last erupted in 1914, is one of the more recent eruptions in the country. Today it is dormant but there is still much geothermal activity in the area.
