Dover Castle in Kent, England is one of England's most historic and enduring of castles. The earliest dated part of the site is a Roman lighthouse with more recent developments being the underground tunnels used as a military command centre during WW11. A subsequent plan to use the site as a shelter for the regional Government in the event of a nuclear attack was abandoned resulting in the site becoming a tourist attraction.

Hiorne Folly Tower, Arundel, West Sussex, England. Hiorne Tower is a Grade II listed building, built around 1787 for the Duke of Norfolk. The tower is a 50ft-high triangular structure in Gothic revival style with three octagonal corner turrets made in flint and stone chequer-work with pointed and mullioned windows. The folly overlooks the valley of Pughdean, Swanbourne Lake and the sweeping South Downs at Arundel. The original castle of Aberystwyth was built by the Normans in the early 12th century with Timber and groundworks but was later replaced by a Stone Castle built by the Welsh.

After William the Conqueror took England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, his kinsman Richard Fitz Gilbert was tasked with guarding the crossing of the River Medway. He built a simple Motte-and-bailey castle. The castle was later besieged in 1088 when Fitz Gilber's descendants rebelled against William's son, King William II. The king had the castle and Tonbridge burnt to the ground in revenge. By 1100, a new wooden castle was replaced with a stone shell keep and in 1295 a stone wall encircled the town. The castle was used to safekeep the great seal of England for a while when King Edward I visited France. In 1793, the mansion was built, and both buildings are now Grade I listed.
