The groundhog, or Marmota monax, is also called a woodchuck and is in the rodent family of Sciuridae, and in the general category of marmot. The groundhog is shown in detail standing erect looking left, as if on alert.  Its fur, whiskers, ears front limbs and claws are in fine focus.  There is one small piece of green grass resting on its bottom lip and the photograph shows both the thicker brown undercoat and the longer, lighter guard hairs.  Its underbelly is damp from the morning dew.
