$Field characters: 66-84mm, abdomen: 50-61mm, Hw: 45-52mm.\n\nBlue Emperor is presently a common species, which is only absent from parts of the northern provinces of Groningen and Friesland. It is found at most larger bodies of standing water. Compared to the pre-1990 period, the species has increased strongly. So is with other dragonflies, Blue Emperor has benefit of the gradual warming in the last decades.\n\nThe largest Aeshnid in most of our area and common Species in the Netherlands$

Emerald Dragonfly / Hemicordulia Armstrongi / Male . Photographed at Lake Okaro New Zealand. This is a recently discovered New Zealand Dragonfly. It was previously mistaken for Hemicordia Australiae The difference was noticed when a normally aggressive Hemicordia Australiae males were observed ignoring what was thought to be other Hemicordia Australiae males . It was later discovered the ignored male dragonflies were Hemicordulia Armstrongi who have no interest in female Hemicordia Australiae dragonflies

$A brown and rather plain hawker, with largely clear wings and conspicuous green eyes. The yellow triangle on S2 is diagnostic, as are the colour and shape of the hind wing base. Males patrol marshy ditches, reedy lakesides and other lush, calm waters.\nField characters: Tot 62-66mm, Ab 47-54mm, Hw 39-45mm.\nHabitat: Ditches, marshes, ponds and lakes with rich vegetation. Favours swamps of Water-soldier (Stratiotes aloides) in most of its northern range.\nFlight Season: May to August in most of its range, most abundant in June; earlier than most Aeshnia.\nDistribution: Widespread but very local in much of its range, especially in south-west, often numerous where present. \n\nThis is not a very common Species in the described Habitats in the Netherlands.$

$Identification:\nTot 57-66mm, Ab 39-49mm, Hw 37-42mm.\nIn flight often confused with the related and similar small A. mixta. Ranges less far north, but also migratory and may be invasive in good summers.\nMales are often observed when making low patrols over drying wetlands, showing their noticeable bright colors. The males vivid blue eyes and abdomen and largely green thorax sides are especially distinctive.\nHabitat: Prefers standing waters that dry up over the course of Summer, often overgrown with low rushes, bulrushes or reeds.\nFlight Season: On average, emerges earlier than A. mixta. Seen mainly from May to August, especially in the later months.\nDistribution: Seldom abundant, and only permanently present around the Mediterranean, but scarce in much of Iberia and North Africa. Hot summer weather may lead to influxes further north. Occurs east to Mongolia.\n\nThis Picture is made in a Fen area in Flevoland in half August 2022 by high Summer temperatures.$
