Stachys palustris grows among grasses in the wild
Short to medium, hairless, tufted perennial. Leaves heart-shaped, the basal long-stalked; stem-leaf solitary, near centre of stem, clasping. Flowers solitary white, 15-30mm, with 5 oval petals, branched staminodes and 5 stamens; petals with translucent veins. Fruit a small capsule.\nHabitat: Moist places, moors and marshes, wet pastures, fens, streamside flushes, generally on base-rich soils, to 2500m.\nFlowering season: June-September.\nDistribution: Throughout Europe, except the extreme north, often local, sometimes forming extensive colonies.\nIn lowland areas of Europe the species has declined due to land-drainage.
