The Basilisk, as that is what this strange creature is, is the heraldic guardian and emblem of Basel, Switzerland. This mythical creature is most depicted as a reptile, and is reputed to be the king of all serpents. One of the most feared of all mythological beasts, a basilisk is said to have the power to cause death with a single glance. It is often described as a beast of 3 parts. A dragon, with a snake’s tail and a cockerel’s head. The creature features on the Basel city seal, and can be found in different guises throughout the city, particularly on fountains - as shown here on the Dreizack, or Neptune Fountain.
