The Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, off East Africa. It's home to numerous beaches, coral reefs and nature reserves, as well as rare animals such as giant Aldabra tortoises.

Galapagos tortoises are the largest of the tortoises, weighing up to 900 pounds. When sailors first visited the Galapagos Islands in the 17th century, there were 13 different subspecies of Galapagos tortoises. Unfortunately, several of these are now extinct.

Aldabra giant tortoise, Mauritius

There are many subspecies of giant tortoises that are found on different islands and have different appearances. Those that live on the larger islands where there is more rain have “dome” shaped shells, while those that live in drier conditions are smaller tortoises and have a “saddleback” shell.

Aldabra Giant Tortoise (Dipsochelys gigantea) is the last surviving giant tortoise species, which once inhabited some islands of the Indian Ocean. The carapace reaches around 120 cm in length and about 250 kg. The tortoise can live over 100 years. The Aldabra of Mauritius are derived from grandparent stock imported from the Seychelles in the 1880s.
