United States. Arizona. Coconino County. Grand Canyon National Park - North Rim. The Grand Canyon from the Walhalla Overlook. The Walhalla Plateau is a peninsula surrounded on three sides by the Grand Canyon. The Walhalla Overlook offers a fine view down to the confluence of Unkar Creek and the Colorado river, almost a mile below. This place was the home to an Anasazi community around 1,000 years ago. They grew corn, squash and beans on fields close to the river, or on terraces at higher elevations. Over 100 ancient farming sites have been identified in the so-called Walhalla Glades. After wintering on the canyon floor, people climbed to higher altitudes in early summer. The small pueblo of Walhalla Glades has been occupied for roughly a century by a group of around 20 people.
