Istanbul / Constantinople, Turkey, Eastern Roman Empire: Hagia Sophia - Church of the Holy Wisdom of God - the eight calligraphic roundels / medallions of Hagia Sophia were placed in the mid 19th century by Fossati brothers during the Sultan Abdulmejid reign. The huge wooden panels designed by a Izzet Efendi bear the names of Allah, Mohammed and his grandsons; Hasan and Hussein and four caliphs. Uthman ibn Affan (576–656 AD) was the third caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate and a prominent companion of Prophet Muhammad. Uthman was instrumental in the early spread of Islam and played a significant role in consolidating the Muslim community. He is best remembered for commissioning the standardization of the Quran. His leadership saw significant territorial expansions, including parts of North Africa and Central Asia, but it was also marked by internal dissent. His policies, particularly in appointing relatives to key positions, provoked accusations of nepotism, leading to unrest. Uthman was assassinated by rebels in 656 AD, deepening divisions within the Muslim community and set the stage for the First Fitna (Islamic civil war).
