The bird’s compact form contrasts with the delicate, airy foliage of the mesquite, creating a serene moment in the arid landscape. The textured bark and soft green leaves frame the hummingbird, highlighting the intricate details of both the bird and its natural habitat. I was able to get very close to this hummer to take some great shots of it at the fairy duster. Increased my shutter speed and kept shooting.

The female and male have such different plumages that they appear to be two separate species (sexual dimorphism).\n\nIt is usually seen against the light, so that the male appears to be all black. In fact, only the chest, belly and throat are blue-black, while the rest of the plumage is a deep bottle green. The tail is all dark wine-colored, finely edged with black. Sometimes it can be seen half-open and the light, passing through it, allows this reddish tone to be perceived. The beak is very long and thin, almost twice the length of the head, and has a slightly downward-curving tip, in a characteristic silhouette. The membrane over the nostrils is feathered to the middle; the tail is about half the length of the wing and is wide and slightly indented.\n\nThe female shares the shape of the beak and the color of the tail with the male. Apart from this, the long black stripe that starts at the base of the beak and ends on the belly, flanked by wide white bands, stands out. The rest of the plumage is light green. Individuals can measure 11 to 12 cm in length.\n\nThe young, like the female, have white-margined feathers on their backs.

Desert birds tend to be much more abundant where the vegetation is lusher and thus offers more insects, fruit and seeds as food. Where the Arizona cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tucson and Mesa adjoin desert washes or foothills these birds can be common as well.
