Until the 19th century, it occurred from east of the Indus River in Pakistan to the Bengal region and the Narmada River in Central India and throughout parts of the middle east.Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, with its administrative centre, Sasan Gir, is a forest, national park and wildlife sanctuary near Talala. Besides Africa, Gir National Park is the only place in the world where lions roam free in the wild. Gir is a home to 40 species of mammals and over 400 species of birds. Gujarat, the north western state of India,  encompasses part of site of the Indus Valley civilisation, the oldest known to mankind and is also home to some of the most historic sites and religious locations in India. The Rann of Kutch is famous for its arid desert like landscapes as well as wildlife such as the Wild Ass, together with Gir Forest, home to the only Asiatic Lions in the continent.

The Asiatic lion is a lion population in Gujarat, India, which is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List because of its small population size. Since 2010, the lion population in and around Gir Forest National Park has steadily increased.
