Closeup of a  brightly colored Nudibranch crawling on corals
Flabellina affinis, underwater shot.
The Red Sea is home to a diverse array of marine life, including the striking nudibranchs, which are soft-bodied, brightly colored sea slugs. Known for their incredible array of colors and intricate patterns, nudibranchs are a favorite subject for underwater photographers and divers exploring the region’s coral reefs.\n\nNudibranchs are gastropods, but unlike snails, they lack a protective shell. Instead, they display vibrant hues ranging from brilliant oranges, pinks, and purples to electric blues and yellows. This vivid coloration often serves as a warning to predators of their toxicity or unpalatability, though some species are harmless.\n\nIn the Red Sea, nudibranchs can be found on the reefs, where they feed on sponges, algae, or other small invertebrates. Species like the Spanish dancer, known for its large size and flowing red body, and the blue dragon (Glaucus atlanticus), with its shimmering blue hues, are particularly popular with divers. These fascinating creatures are typically found in shallow waters but can also be spotted in deeper areas of the reef.\n\nThe Red Sea's clear, warm waters and healthy coral ecosystems provide an ideal environment for these colorful creatures, making it a prime location for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts eager to discover the vibrant world of nudibranchs.

The Nudibranch Tryon's Hypselodoris Hypselodoris tryoni (ex. Risbecia tryoni) occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean from Tanzania to the Society Islands and Indonesia to Japan and the Philippines, max. length 10cm. This species, like all the members of the order Nudibranchia, are simultaneous hermaphrodites with this mating behavior: Both individuals darts their penis toward each other to induce one to act as a male and the other as the female. The victorious one to penetrate the body wall is the dominant male. \nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia. \n1°27'39.69 N 125°14'33.342 E at 17m depth

The image shows a vibrant Solar powered nudi (Phyllodesmium longicirrum) crawling gracefully in the crystal-clear waters of a tropical coral reef. This stunning sea slug is known for its unique ability to derive energy from sunlight using symbiotic algae in its body. Its translucent body is adorned with beautiful patterns of blue, purple, and orange, making it a true underwater jewel.
A tiny nudibranch nicknamed the “sea bunny,” Jorunna parva, crawls delicately across the reef bed in Thai coastal waters. Its rabbit-like appearance, with ear-like rhinophores and a soft furry texture, makes it a favorite among macro underwater photographers. Captured in vivid detail in the warm tropical sea, showcasing rare and adorable marine life.

Phyllodesmium longicirrum, the Long-cirri or Solar-powered Phyllodesmium occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific. The species is a very spectacular aeolid, which has evolved a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae. It is exceptionally large, often more than 12, max. 14cm long, and the cerata have evolved into large solar paddles to maximise the animal's ability to farm the plants in its body. It is known to feed on the soft-coral Sarcophyton. \nTwo specimens meet, the smaller at the left.\nLembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°28'47.814 N 125°15'1.26 E at 14m depth
Costasiella usagi, also known as the rabbit sea slug, is a species of sacoglossan sea slug, a shell-less marine opisthobranch gastropod mollusk in the family Costasiellidae. It is notable for its ability to incorporate chloroplasts from the algae it eats into its own tissues, allowing it to photosynthesize. This makes Costasiella usagi one of only a few animals known to be able to perform photosynthesis.\n\nCostasiella usagi is a small sea slug, typically measuring only a few millimeters in length. It has a translucent body with a white or cream-colored head and foot. The cerata, or \
