Vientiane, Laos: Patuxai (literally Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph) - Patuxai was built in the 1960s as a “Monument to the Heroes of the Royal Army”, celebrating Laos' independence from France (1949). In 1995, on the 20th anniversary of the seizure of power by the communists of Pathet Lao, the triumphal arch was given the new dedication to “The Heroes of August 23, 1975” (Day of the Communist seizure of power in Vientiane). The exterior of the gate is decorated with traditional Laotian motifs, including Buddhist symbols, Hindu deities and apsaras.
