Bumpass Hell is a hydrothermal area in Lassen Volcanic National Park, located in Northern California. Steam is released from the Lassen hydrothermal system, where the temperature of the steam gets as high as 322°F (161°C). Bumpass Hell was named after Kendall Vanhook Bumpass, a settler who burned a leg after falling into a boiling pool. His leg was eventually amputated.

In Victorian times Wheal Maid Valley was described as the richest square mile of land on earth. In 1852, the mine was almalgamated with Poldice Mine and throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the mine site was turned into large lagoons and used as a tip for two other nearby mines, Mount Wellington and Wheal Jane.⁣\n⁣\nThe site was bought by Gwennap District Council for a price of £1 in 2002. An investigation by the Environment Agency that concluded in 2007, found that soil near the mine had high levels of arsenic, copper and zinc contamination and by 2012, it was deemed too hazardous for human activity.⁣\n⁣\nIn 2014, a 72-year-old man from Falmouth died at the site after what was initially thought to be a cycling accident. It was later found that the man had been murdered. A 34-year-old was found guilty and sentenced to life and to serve at least 28 years.⁣\n⁣\nToday, nature continues to reclaim the site and puts the scarred landscape in a constant state of flux.⁣
