A curious fruit, the medlar. Also known as a custard apple, it belongs to the apple sub-family. It is not edible until it has frozen and thawed again. This adaptation perhaps means that its seeds are distributed in the following spring, avoiding the winter time. The shape of this fruit is so like a rose hip that it is no surprise that it belongs within the rose family. A relevant quote from Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet): (Now will he sit under a medlar tree, And wish his mistress were that kind of fruit As maids call medlars...) Later, an 18th-century description: (A fruit, vulgarly called an open arse; of which it is more truly than delicately said, that it is never ripe till it is as rotten as a turd, and then it is not worth a fart.).
