The tree is about 17 feet tall and appears perfectly healthy. Soon, however, it can be expected to succumb to chestnut blight, a disease that killed almost all mature American chestnuts after it was introduced to North America in 1904. Today, seedlings and saplings of Castanea dentata sprouting from the roots of dead trees are not uncommon, but mature trees that produce chestnuts are rare. The scientific name refers to the distinctively toothed, or dentate, leaves. The chestnut is a member of the beech family.
