![Porto (Portuguese: Porto [ˈpoɾtu]ⓘ) is the third most populous municipality in Portugal, after Lisbon and neighboring Vila Nova de Gaia. It had 231,828 inhabitants in 20211. Its population density is 5,565 inhabitants/km².2 The central core of the city of Porto is surrounded by the Greater Porto subregion and, more broadly, the Porto Metropolitan Area, which forms its metropolitan area of 2,959,045 inhabitants. .[citation needed] It is located in the north of the country, on the right bank of the Duero at its mouth into the Atlantic Ocean.
