The male Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus), with its dark wing feathers and brilliant red head and body, is a notable exception. This flycatcher is fairly common in parts of the Southwest USA as well as Central and South America. Its habitat includes grassland or desert with scattered trees but is more frequently near water. The diet of the vermilion flycatcher is exclusively insects which are mostly caught in the air but they may also hover and drop to the ground for small prey.
