Black bear standing to check out a bird feeder in Washington, Connecticut, in rural Litchfield County, mid-April. There are an estimated 1,500 bears in the state. They have been sighted in every Connecticut town and city. Though the fourth-ranked state in population density, Connecticut is the 14th most forested, providing good bear habitat. The state recently enacted a law against feeding bears and urges people to take down their bird feeders by mid-March, when bears awaken from their winter sleep.

A black bear takes advantage of the spawning salmon. Tired and warm out, these fish do not put up much of a fight. The fish are easy pickings for the bear. The bears of Valdez, Alaska have many fish to chose from.
Bear encounter in the woods of Litchfield County in Connecticut, where most of the state's 1,500 bears are found. Bears can move as quietly as cats, and in lush woods they're hard to see. You could turn around and see one standing there. This one started huffing and puffing, but went away when the photographer raised his voice. Speaking aggressively to a bear, however, can backfire. This photographer watches out for smaller, younger bears in particular, since they may not have yet learned to avoid people.

Front view of a big black bear on a Litchfield, Connecticut roadside in autumn. Wild and free. It's November, so this bear is well fed and about to go into hibernation. The photographer describes his experience:\n\nI get out of the car and lean against a tree. When the bear stops eating berries and looks in my direction -- a signal that it wants to go where I am -- I withdraw.\n \nA man walking by heads toward the bear with his cellphone. I tell his companion that the bear seems ready to come forward, so walking toward it is not a good idea. She seems to understand. Meanwhile, other people arrive and get out of their cars.\n \nSuddenly, it's like a park road in Yellowstone. People are in front of the bear and on either side of it, holding up phones. Thick underbrush and a pond behind the bear prevent it from going the opposite way. If it knocks someone over to get out of there, they'll hunt it down.\n \nLuckily, sunset is coming. The bearfest can only last so long.\n\nNikon D500 camera, 300mm lens, f/4. First in a series of three.
