Rome, Italy - April 7, 2017: Wide angle image of the Pantheon and Piazza della Rotunda, filled with tourists (and possibly some local Romans) on a morning in spring. The Pantheon ('to every god') in Rome, Italy was commissioned by Marcus Agrippa as a temple to all the gods of Ancient Rome, and built by Emperor Hadrian in about 126 AD. The inscription on the wall translates to: “Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, made this building during his third consulship”. The piazza (city square) was made on the order of Pope Eugenius IV (1431–1439). It took its name from the Pantheon, which had been converted into the Christian church (informally) known as Santa Maria Rotonda (in the 7th century AD). In the center of the piazza is a fountain (to the right in the image), the Fontana del Pantheon (constructed by Giacomo Della Porta under Pope Gregory XIII in 1575), surmounted by an Egyptian obelisk (added to the fountain in 1711 under Pope Clement XI).
