The New Cathedral of Coimbra, originally the church of the Jesuit Formation house of Coimbra, was established in 1543. In 1759, the Jesuit Order was banned from Portugal by the Marquis of Pombal, Prime-Minister of King José I. Coimbra is a historical town, because of the University of Coimbra, being one of the largest universities in Portugal, which was founded in 1290 by King Dinis.
