$The Ottawa Locks, also known as the Entrance Locks, are a historic and iconic feature of the Rideau Canal where it meets the Ottawa River in downtown Ottawa, Ontario. There are 8 locks, with a total lift of 79 feet. The locks connect \t•\tthe Ottawa River and the Rideau Canal Basin, directly below Parliament Hill and adjacent to the Château Laurier and Bytown Museum. \n\nBuilt between 1826 and 1832 as part of the full Rideau Canal system, and designed by Lt. Colonel John By of the British Royal Engineers, the canal system was for military defense after the War of 1812 to provide a secure supply and commercial route between Montreal and Kingston. \n\nThe locks are manually operated to this day, using traditional hand cranks and winches, preserving their heritage character.\nThe Fairmont Château Laurier is a historic and architecturally significant hotel located in downtown Ottawa, Ontario. Positioned near the intersection of Rideau Street and Sussex Drive, it overlooks the Rideau Canal and is adjacent to Parliament Hill, making it a prominent feature in Canada's capital.$
