This ray can reach a diameter of up to 1,5m. The almost circular body is covered with dark spots, which can fade with age or dissolve completely. The whip-shaped tail is almost twice as long as the actual body and, from the clearly visible sting, much darker than the rest of the fish.
The blue-spotted stingray (Taeniura lymma) is a captivating resident of the Red Sea, Egypt, easily recognized by its vibrant blue spots and yellowish-brown body. These small, graceful rays are often found resting on sandy seabeds, concealed under coral ledges, or gliding smoothly across shallow lagoons and reefs.\n\nWith a maximum disc width of about 35 cm, the blue-spotted stingray is a relatively small species. Its striking coloration serves as a warning to potential predators, as the ray has venomous spines on its tail for defense. However, they are non-aggressive and typically shy, preferring to avoid human interaction.\n\nThe Red Sea offers an ideal habitat for these rays, with its warm, clear waters and abundant coral formations. Popular diving and snorkeling spots, such as Ras Mohammed National Park and the Straits of Tiran, provide frequent sightings of these stunning creatures. They are often seen foraging for food, using their electroreceptive organs to detect buried prey like crabs, shrimp, and small fish.\n\nTo protect these beautiful animals, visitors should maintain a respectful distance, avoid disturbing their habitat, and never attempt to touch or corner them.\n\nObserving a blue-spotted stingray in its natural environment is a highlight of exploring the Red Sea’s rich marine biodiversity, offering a glimpse into the delicate interplay of life beneath the waves.

The bluespotted ribbontail ray (Taeniura lymma) is a species of stingray in the family Dasyatidae. Found from the intertidal zone to a depth of 30 m (100 ft), this species is common throughout the tropical Indian and western Pacific Oceans in nearshore, coral reef-associated habitats. It is a fairly small ray, not exceeding 35 cm (14 in) in width, with a mostly smooth, oval pectoral fin disc, large protruding eyes, and a relatively short and thick tail with a deep fin fold underneath. It can be easily identified by its striking color pattern of many electric blue spots on a yellowish background, with a pair of blue stripes on the tail.
