The unfinished structure of the new cathedral on the right side of the Duomo in the medieval heart of Siena, in Tuscany. The construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral or Duomo dedicated to the Assumption of Mary was completed between 1215 and 1348, becoming one of the religious architectural masterpieces of the Romanesque and Italian Gothic style. But in 1339 it was decided to expand the Cathedral, leaving the existing structure as a transept of the new construction. Unfortunately the new and larger cathedral was not completed and the structure of the unfinished main nave (in the photo) is today called the Duomo Nuovo. Siena is one of the most beautiful Italian cities of art, in the heart of the Tuscan hills, famous for its immense artistic and historical heritage and for the Palio, where the seventeen historical districts of the city compete every year in Piazza del Campo in one of the oldest horse racing in the world. The stunning facade and bell tower of the majestic Duomo, in the heart of the medieval city of Siena, in Tuscany, central Italy. The construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, was completed between 1215 and 1370, becoming one of the religious architectural masterpieces of the Romanesque and Italian Gothic style. The lower part of the facade was made of white and pink marble by the sculptor and architect Giovanni Pisano between 1284 and 1297, while the upper part is the work of the sculptor Camaino di Crescentino, built between 1299 and 1317. Inside, the Sienese cathedral preserves countless artistic masterpieces created by Nicola Pisano and his son Giovanni, Michelangelo Buonarroti, the Pinturicchio, Donatello, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, just to name a few of the best known.
