In winter, the turnstone is dark brown above, with a black pattern on the face and breast, a white chin and white belly. During summer, adults have a colourful, chestnut- and black-chequered pattern on the back. When they fly, turnstones show a white patch on the back, broad, white wingbars, and white patches at the base of the tail.

Willemstad, Curaçao, Kingdom of the Netherlands: the Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres) is a small, stocky shorebird in the family Scolopacidae, characterized by its short, upturned bill, orange legs, and striking breeding plumage of rusty upperparts with bold black-and-white head and chest patterns; it measures about 22–25 cm in length and weighs 85–120 g. This highly migratory species breeds in Arctic tundra across northern North America and Eurasia, with two subspecies—A. i. morinella in the Nearctic and A. i. interpres in the Palearctic—and winters along coastlines worldwide, favoring rocky shores, sandy beaches, and mudflats where it forages for invertebrates by flipping stones and debris. In Curaçao, it occurs as a non-breeding passage migrant and winter visitor primarily from late summer through spring, utilizing coastal beaches, rocky shores, and saline wetlands; key sites include Klein Curaçao, Playa Canoa, and Saliña Jan Thiel.
