White Sands New Mexico
White Sands National Park is located in the state of New Mexico, United States. It is known for its unique and stunning landscape of white gypsum sand dunes, which cover an area of about 275 square miles (710 square kilometers). The park is situated in the northern Chihuahuan Desert, encompassing part of the larger Tularosa Basin. As for the vegetation in the park, it is adapted to the harsh desert environment. While the majority of the park's surface is covered by sand, there are several plant species that have managed to establish themselves in this challenging habitat. Some of the most common plants found in White Sands National Park include:\n\nSoaptree Yucca (Yucca elata): This iconic desert plant has long, spiky leaves that form a rosette shape. It can grow up to 20 feet (6 meters) tall and produces tall flower stalks with creamy-white blossoms.\n\nCholla Cactus (Cylindropuntia spp.): Cholla cacti are known for their branching, cylindrical stems covered in sharp spines. These cacti have adapted to conserve water and can survive in arid conditions.\n\nSand Verbena (Abronia spp.): These low-growing perennial plants feature small, colorful flowers and succulent leaves. They thrive in the sandy soils of the dunes and add splashes of pink, purple, and white to the landscape.\n\nDesert Marigold (Baileya multiradiata): This bright yellow wildflower is well-suited to desert environments. It has silvery-gray leaves and produces daisy-like flowers that bloom from spring to fall.\n\nApache Plume (Fallugia paradoxa): Apache Plume is a shrub that grows up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall. It features delicate, white, rose-like flowers and feathery fruits that resemble plumes, hence its name.
