Wild salmon swimming upstream at Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park (Alaska).
Different stages of life of an Alaskan red salmon (sockeye, Oncorhynchus nerka). In the ocean (ocean phase) it shows silvery colors, which change dramatically towards reddish after entering rivers for spawning (spawning phase, freshwater phase). Pictures of a real, fresh caught fish were taken in Alaska, ocean phase female on the top, freshwater phase male on the bottom.
The salmon run is the time when salmon, which have migrated from the ocean, swim to the upper reaches of rivers where they spawn on gravel beds. After spawning, all Pacific salmon and most Atlantic salmon die, and the salmon life cycle starts over again.
The journey is long and difficult. Many fish will fail. The path up the fish ladders is near the end of the salmon run. These fish are driven and determined to be successful. The event happens every year in Valdez, Alaska.

August 27, 2021, Valdez, Alaska. Salmon, in the thousands, have made their way to their spawning grounds. These fish fought to the very last breath of their life to do what they were intended to do. It is quite a sight to see thousand of fish fighting, even to their demise, I to get to the place of their birth.
